Air Stones and Oxygenation for Your Pond

Required Hardware and Parts

Koi originating from as river fish require a lot more oxygen than what a closed system can provide.

This is even more so during warm temperatures and during the night. Both the stocking levels as well as koi health are greatly helped by increased dissolved oxygen levels in the water During the summer months these can drop to 1/3 of the winter levels .

Due to the length of my mud pond I require 4 sets of air stones and due to the depth of 15ft a 1/3HP compressor has to be used.

Valve Installation Because my pond requires 4 sets of air stones  at various depths, it is necessary to use individual valves to control the air flow. I fist split the flow in 2, then each set in 2 again using 6 valves that makes it a lot easier to set the air flow . The air pump has to be protected from the elements (green container with air vents) serviced by  a GFI protected receptacle.

Hose Hookup and Weights

Air supply pipes will float up, so it is necessary to weigh them down and I use 1/2 a brick every 6ft and that works well .The air stones need to be on a base or they will sink into the soft mud. I found that a boat is necessary for accurate placement . Shown are the largest set of stones that cover the central portion .If the pond is round only one set of stones would be required .

Operation

Shown are 2 sets of air stones. One has to be careful in the amount of air used in relation to the sides of the pond as to much will cause the waves of water to erode the banks.
